A ruby and diamond ring sold for a record $6.6 million 14th of May 2012 at a charity auction of jewels owned by the Brazilian-born billionaire Lily Safra.

London-based Safra was offering 70 lots of her jewelry, dating from the 1970s to the present day, in a sale conducted by Christie’s at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues.

The most expensive JAR piece was a ruby and diamond Camellia flower brooch that was created for Safra in 2003. Pave- set with rubies weighing 173.09 carats, it fetched 4 million francs against an estimate of as much as 1.4 million francs.

All 70 lots found buyers, with 10.6 million francs contributed by the JAR group.The sale includes the largest single owner selection of jewels by JAR – the elusive Paris based Bronx born jewellery design trendsetter – ever seen at auction.  JAR creations rare come to auction and the sale represents a singular opportunity for JAR lovers to purchase some of his best jewels.

The highly anticipated auction of ‘Jewels For Hope: The Collection of Mrs. Lily Safra’, held on the evening of May 14 at Christie’s Geneva, realised a total of US$37,924,551 / SFr.35,115,325.  100% sold by lot and by value, this superb collection far exceeded its total pre-sale estimate. As a result of its success, The Lily Safra Foundation has decided to donate the full proceeds of the sale not only to the 20 charitable institutions previously announced but also to 12 additional organisations.

The top lot of the sale was a 32.08 carats cushion-shaped Burmese ruby and diamond ring, by Chaumet, sold for US$6,742,440 / SFr.6,243,000 against an estimate of $3,000,000-5,000,000, setting a new world record price for any ruby sold at auction. Formerly in the collection of Luz Mila Patiño, Countess du Boisrouvray, it has been renamed ‘The Hope Ruby’.

The extraordinary group of 18 jewels by JAR, the largest ever seen on the market from a single-owner collection, sold 100% by lot and by value, totaling US$11,473,920 / SFr.10,624,000 and becoming the most valuable private-owner collection of JAR jewels ever sold at auction.

Shipping billionaire John Fredriksen spent about $610 million to buy new vessels and indicated he may make more purchases this year, a sign that a plunge in prices might be near an end.

Fredriksen ordered six oil-product tankers from STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. for 235.5 billion won ($210 million), the Changwon, South Korea-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. He also is chairman of Golar LNG Ltd., which placed orders worth $400 million with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. for two ships to haul liquefied natural gas and said it’s in talks on buying more.

Both Parnon and Arcadia are controlled by Fredriksen’s Farahead Holdings, based in Limassol.

The U.S. Billionaire investor  Sheldon Adelson and  his wife Miriam visited Madrid Sunday the 6th of May 2012, to inspect the land located in the municipality of Alcorcón,  the land is now the favorite to  be the the site of the new  Eurovegas complex.

Adelson meet with  counselors of the Treasury  Percival Manglano, and Transportation minister Pablo Cavero, as well as the local mayor  David Perez and the President of Promomadrid  Jesus Sainz.

After the visit  he immediately flew back  to Las Vegas, Nevada in his private jet.

The land for the new  Eurovegas complex in Alcorcón in Madrid is bordered by five roads – the M-501 to the north, the M-506 and A-5 to the south, the M-40 to the  east and M-50 to the west – its only 25 minutes from Madrid-Barajas airport and 20 minutes to the center of the capital.

The American businessman was interested in liberal measures launched by the Government of Esperanza Aguirre, and  the fact Madrid count on one of the highest a per capita income in Europe, with per capita income of almost 32,000 euros (43,000 dollars).

Aldelson appreciated the public services,  the public health network, the educational system, and the transportation system (the Metro in Madrid is the third largest in the world, surpassed only by London and New York), and the ability for the younger generation to speak English, which  is very important to them.

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson wants to build a  €15-25 Billion “Euro-Vegas” in Spain.

“We are looking at 300 hectares of land and constructing 12 integrated resorts, 3,000 rooms each. A mini Las Vegas, about half the size of the Las Vegas strip in Spain for the European market.” says Adelson.

Las Vegas had 39 million tourists last year, so the Euro-Vegas impact could be enormous for Spain.

Adelson started looking at Spain as a possible site for a European gambling magnet in 2007, but his proposals fell flat with the then-ruling Socialist Party.

But since the more business-friendly Popular Party took power, along with the downturn, Adelson’s plans are said to be back on track.

Now, the question of where the Spanish economy will be five or 10 years out certainly is open, but for gamblers like Adelson, taking on the risk of creating a marquee property now when borrowing costs and building costs are near all-time lows might turn out to be the wiliest wager of all.

The creation of Eurovegas would be a five to 10-year project, giving plenty of time for Europe to emerge from its current economic troubles.

Madrid is now the frontrunner in the race to host Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s (LVS) first European integrated resort, a multibillion dollar project that Barcelona is also trying to attract, Barcelona’s mayor Xavier Trias conceded Wednesday the 18th of April 2012.

Sands’s Chairman Sheldon Adelson has announced that he expects to make a final decision on the matter by summer 2012, Trias told reporters during a briefing here. According to several media estimates, Sands plans to invest as much as $35 billion, which is just over €26 Billion in a casino complex that may create thousands of jobs in Spain, at a time when the euro zone’s fourth-largest economy struggles with economic contraction and soaring unemployment.The figure from Sheldon himself however is €15 Billion.

“Madrid is in the most favorable situation to win, even though many people told [Adelson] that Barcelona is the best location,” Trias said.

The project would be located either in Alcorcon, to the west of Madrid city, or Cornella, just north of Barcelona, Trias said. However, he added that Adelson’s conditions to launch the resort and Spain’s legal system have caused difficulties in the negotiations.

As an example, Trias cited Spain’s strict regulations against allowing minors in casinos, which may clash with the design of some integrated projects. Harsh anti-smoking regulations implemented in recent years may also be a problem, Trias added.

“We just can’t do everything he wants. He’s got to adapt his model to European laws,” Trias said.

Does he ? Spain need the investment and 12 hotels with 36,000 hotel beds, six casinos, a concert hall, 18,000 slot machines, several theaters,shopping centers, bars and restaurants and 3 golf courses are surely to be build in Spain. Its expected to create over 250.000 new jobs in Spain.

Spain cannot afford to say “no”.

Sheldon Adelson, however, says he will only go ahead if Spain bends its rules on indoor smoking and caps on soaring skyscrapers.

‘There is no one place in Europe that is fun to go to and play the slots or play tables or have a good time with an adult couple or family,’ Adelson said in a meeting with investors in New York last  September 2011.

The two sites being eyed in Madrid each cover an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields, the casino group ask for 300 hectares of land for free in a easy accessible location.

Could Costa del Sol Europe’s number 1 holiday destination could be a surprise 3rd option, as the government is considering the offer from Las Vegas Sands.

Why not  - South of Spain  offer year round sunshine and  Marbella is Spain´s Monaco with many super rich visitors. Gambling and large events arranged by the casinos  are keeping Monaco busy most of the year.Malaga have a fantastic new airport with a capacity for 20million visitors and new  High speed Trains stopping in Malaga.Some late behind the scenes moves could have an impact.

Barcelona and Madrid already have 1000´s of  5 stars hotels, the Andalucian coast would prove less competitive and create a massive impact on future development of the coast and Andalucia.

Gayle Allard, an economist who specializes in labor market issues at IE Business School in Madrid, said that Spain is already a huge tourist draw, with its sunshine and great beaches, and a casino complex would build on those assets. Spain is regularly one of the world’s three most visited countries, along with the United States and France.

The Spanish project is perhaps the most unique, but it’s not Las Vegas Sands’ only planned venture. The company also has plans to expand throughout Asia, and build on the success it has enjoyed in the region with its marquee properties in Macau and Singapore.

“We are looking to build two (hotel/casinos) each in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Taiwan is late in catching up. There is pending legislation in the other three countries,” Adelson said.

That announcement to build a Euro-Vegas in Spain came right before the opening of the new Sands Cotai Central, a stunningly costly property featuring 5,800 rooms, 300,000 square feet of gambling space and 1.2 million square feet of shopping, entertainment, dining and convention facilities.

The build-out of this new property also can be seen as a gamble, especially given the banter about China’s so-called “hard landing.” Remember, however, that Macau is the only place where Chinese nationals are legally allowed to gamble in casinos. And despite the recent slowdown in the Chinese economy, gambling revenue in the former Portuguese colony surged 24.4% year-over-year in March to 25 billion patacas ($3.1 billion).

At the center of the world’s biggest gaming market, The Venetian Macao is the largest single hotel building in Asia.

Of course, Adelson isn’t the only billionaire building on the streets of Macau. Steve Wynn, CEO of Wynn Resorts , also operates properties in Macau, and of course, in the actual Las Vegas. Wynn is estimated to have a net worth of about $2.5 billion and is ranked 130th on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest people in America. Adelson is estimated to be worth about $24.9 billion and ranks eighth on the Forbes 400.

With big gambles like a mini-Las Vegas in Spain, you can see how Adelson rolled the dice and achieved the kind of success that would fill even Wynn with envy.

Now the question is: Should investors bet on LVS shares based on the company’s ambitious growth plans?

I don’t know about you, but based on past performance, I suspect that getting your chips aligned with Adelson might just be a big winning bet.

The 78-year-old CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp. is one of the richest men in the world and most successful casino developers, but has remained opposed to gaming in cyberspace.

Late in 2011, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Adelson is morally opposed to the federal legalization of online poker and doesn’t believe technology exists to prevent underage gambling.

His views are in stark contrast to those of his U.S. peers, such as the leaders of Caesars Entertainment Corp. and MGM Resorts International.

While Adelson is making news overseas, Nevada is on the verge of making U.S. gaming history by licensing its first companies to run web poker. More than 20 entities have submitted paperwork to regulators, and Sands hasn’t been one of them.

Moody’s Investors Service earlier said in a Las Vegas report that the number of visitors to U.S. gaming capital Las Vegas is expected to top the all-time record 39 million-plus that was set in 2007.

Hotels are benefiting from increased occupancy rates, allowing them to raise rates, Moody’s noted. At the same time, Las Vegas gambling revenue is on the rise but at a slower pace as the slowly recovering economy keeps some vacationers on the sidelines.

In 2011, the number of visitors to Las Vegas rose 4.3% from the prior year, Moody’s noted. As a result, there was a 3.5% increase in slot machine revenue and hotel occupancy also grew 3.4%, to an 83.8% occupancy rate, its first increase since 2007.
