Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has purchased a 53m superyacht valued at approximately €30 million as a venue to host world leaders in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The superyacht, currently named Leo Fun is to be renamed as Sirius by her new owner. She was built in a Turkish yard, Proteksan-Turquoise for an Italian businessman and launched in 2009. She has been operating as a charter yacht and it’s believed Medvedev purchased the yacht after renting her for charter.
Sirius is a trawler style superyacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She can accommodate 12 guests in one master suite on the main deck, one VIP stateroom, three double cabins and one twin cabin on the lower deck. Built to ABS class and fully MCA compliant, the superyacht will achieve 16 knots powered by twin Caterpillar 3512B engines, each producing 1,750hp. The maximum speed is 18 knots and has a range of 4,400 nautical miles at a speed of 13.5 knots.
Proteksan-Turquoise Yachts was established by two leaders of Turkish Boat building Industry; Proteksan Yachts Inc. and Turquoise Yacht Construction. The yard was established in 1997 to start building the 50 meter M/Y Mosaique. Following the success of Mosaique, 10 other mega yachts, ranging from 40 to 58 meters have been delivered to their owners. The two new facilities jointly will allow Proteksan Turquoise to reach a capacity to deliver three superyachts a year.
The yacht is already in use on the Black Sea near Sochi, spokesman for the administration Viktor Khrekov told ITAR-TASS news agency.
