Die Darmstädter Madonna is a seminal work by Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497–1543), begun in 1526 for Jakob Meyer zum Hasen, Mayor of Basel who, with his family, is portrayed praying at the feet of the Virgin and Child and sheltered by her cloak.
Billionaire Reinhold Wuerth, who has collected art for more than 40 years, last year spent about $70 million for a Holbein painting of the Madonna. It was the highest price ever paid for an artwork in Germany.
