Soros has long supported liberal causes. Through his Open Society Institute, he pledged $100 million to Human Rights Watch in September, in part to counteract America’s loss of “moral high ground.” Last week, he made an indirect contribution to research nonprofit Media Matters to fight Fox News and its “incendiary rhetoric.”

Other notable backers of the legalization of marijuana include insurance billionaire Peter Lewis, who has given more than $200,00 in support of Prop 19 and Facebook’s founding president Sean Parker, who donated $100,000.
