Philip Anschutz‘s holding company is receiving about $3 billion on its recent sales of oil and gas property in the Marcellus Shale of the northeast U.S. and the Bakken Shale of North Dakota, Forbes magazine reports in a profile of the Denver billionaire.
In the profile — appearing in the magazine’s Nov. 8 issue — Forbes calls the Anschutz energy sale “the biggest payday of his life.”
As reported Oct. 5 by denverbusinessjournal.com, Anschutz Exploration Corp. announced it was selling its Appalachian oil and gas acreage in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York to an undisclosed buyer. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
The Forbes article describes Anschutz’s past and present interests in a variety of businesses, from energy and railroads to communications and moviemaking, and his role over the years in such companies as Qwest, Southern Pacific, AEG, the Examiner newspapers and national parks concessionaire Xanterra.
It also notes Anschutz’s reluctance to talk with the press and his efforts to stay out of the limelight. (Anschutz did not sit for an interview with Forbes; he did talk on the record to the Denver Business Journal in 2007 when the newspaper named him its Corporate Citizen of the year.)
The Forbes piece does extensively quote one of Anschutz’s top executives: former Denver Nuggets executive Tim Leiweke, the CEO of entertainment giant AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group).
“He has no ego,” Leiweke says of his boss. “He is the anti-Donald Trump.”
Leiweke adds that Anschutz “is a man I would compare to a Teddy Roosevelt.”
