John Fredriksen, (born 10 May 1944) is a Norwegian-born Cypriot oil tanker and shipping tycoon, owner of the world’s largest oil tanker fleet, and was Norway’s richest man until he chose to abandon his Norwegian citizenship and take up a Cypriot passport. Norwegian magazine Kapital listed Fredriksen in 2010 with a net worth of NOK 69 billion ($13 billion USD).Through his investment companies Hemen Holdings and Meisha, Fredriksen controls the companies Frontline and Golar LNG from London.

In a rare interview, the shipping king John Fredriksen (67) says that the good times in the shipping industry is temporary over.

- The market will come back, but not in two or three years, and until then it’s going to be pretty tough, he said.

The expatriate Norwegian, however, see the situation in the shipping  industry,as an opportunity.
When the market goes bad it’s more an opportunity than a problem, he said.
But the man who controls the world’s largest fleet does not believe that all will survive.

- Most companies will not survive. If this last two years, and we think it will, then many companies will disappear, he said.

- “Scream” too expensive
Last week, Edvard Munch’s pastel picture “The Scream” sold for $ 119.9 million of auction house Sotheby’s. The buyer who paid a record payment is said to be  the royal family in Qatar.

Fredriksen refused  to  participating in the auction he said, that the price was too high.

- I could buy more tankers for the money, says Fredriksen said.

As  Fredriksen’s twin daughters have gotten increasingly more involved his companies many speculate he would retire.

Billionaire daughters, Cecilie Fredriksen, Maryam Nourian and Kathrine Fredriksen.

Tax Refugee
Frederiksen  manages his business empire from London and Cyprus. He has also become a Cypriot citizen. Anything to avoid tax. Through its Cypriot holding company, Hemen Holding, he owns the entire 133.1 million shares in Seadrill.

Hemen Holding is controlled by foundations controlled by Frederiksen and his immediate family. That is, his two daughters, Kathrine and Cecilie.

Fuller is also a major shareholder in other listed companies such as Frontline, Archer, Golden Ocean, Aktiv Kapital, Golar LNG and Marine Harvest.

The last 10-year has been fantastic years.

“John Fredriksen has contempt for the risks, rules and weaklings. While others think,  Fredriksen act, without asking anyone. He does not own everything, but he decides everything.

Fredriksen has the twins Kathrine and Cecilie (born 1983) with his late wife Inger Katharina Astrup Fredriksen. Together they have accumulated personal property around the world, almost all of which have one common feature: beachfront.

The Beachfront Marbella Mansion was bought from a Persian Queen in the early 90s and said to have housed celebrities such as Bruce Willis and Kevin Costner.

Movenpick Resort in Karon sold

PHUKET: The Mövenpick Resort, next to Karon Beach, is to change ownership, with current owner Kingdom Hotel Investments reported to have signed a contract to sell the property to TA Global of Malaysia.

The Movenpick Resort in Karon.

Property pundit Bill Barnett, writing in his thephuketinsider.com blog, reports, “The purchase price for the 338-key property is US$90,208,000 [about B2.7 billion].

“TA Global is an affiliate of Malaysia-based financial services group TA Enterprises.

“Over the past four years the group has embarked on a hotel acquisition strategy which has included buying the Swissotel Merchant Court Singapore, the Westin Melbourne, the Radisson Blue Sydney, the Aava Whistler [in Canada] and the Swissotel Kunchan in China.”

The Mövenpick Karon began life as the Karon Villa and Royal Wing, owned by the Vanich family. In December 2003 it was sold to LaSalle Investment Management, which spent US$20 million (B600 million) on an extensive makeover. Inter-continental was contracted to run the property as a Crowne Plaza resort.

Kingdom Investments, which is more than 90-per-cent-owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, bought the resort in May 2006 for US$98.5 million, at that time about B3.7 billion. Kingdom brought Mövenpick in to run the hotel.

While TA has been on a buying spree, Kingdom has been doing rather the opposite, selling off its stakes in the Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta and the Mövenpick Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It put the Karon property on the market in February this year.

THE CREATOR OF SPANX IS THE YOUNGEST SELF-MADE BILLIONAIRE IN THE WORLD

Spanx is word that most women are familiar with. It’s a type of shapewear that helps to smooth away lumps and bumps and also leaves no trace of a panty line.

The creator of this product, Sara Blakely has been inducted to this year’s Forbes billionaires list, which was released yesterday.

Spanx, an international undergarment company, is worth an estimated $1 billion. Here are a couple of interesting facts about her from a Forbes feature:

She learned how to write her own patent from reading a Barnes and Nobles book and she saved $3,000 in legal costs.

She owns 100 percent of the company.

She went from just having $5,000 in savings when she was 29 to owning a billion dollar company at the age of 41 today.

She has her eccentric moments, and her husband describes her as “50 percent Lucille Ball, 50 percent Einstein.” Some of her goofiest moments include wearing a boot on one foot and a Christian Louboutin heel on the other in Bloomingdale’s, and wearing stretchable candy necklaces and bracelets (bought from a nearby candy store) to the Screen Actors Guild Awards because she left her jewelry at the hotel.

She witnessed a car run over her best friend when she was only 16, and facing mortality at such a young age has driven her. “I think that when you witness death at age 16, there’s a sense of urgency about life,” Blakely says. “The thought of my mortality — I think about it a lot. I find it motivating. It can be any time that your number’s up.”

Roman Abramovich has ended his international search for an architect, settling on the New York-based

Work AC‘s warehouse and landscape-heavy design for the New Holland Island in  St. Petersburg.

Underneath you see the project.

The St. Petersburg Art island is now open to the public  for the first time in 300 years, since June it has already seen over 75,000 visitors, according to the Moscow Times.

New Holland is an 8-hectare island bordered by two canals and a river in the heart of St Petersburg, within 20-minutes walk of the Hermitage and the city’s other major cultural sites. The island was conceived by Peter the Great in 1719, and became Russia’s first military port in 1721. It belonged to the military since its foundation and had thus been closed to the general public for 300 years. We have imagined New Holland Island as a microcosm of wider St. Petersburg: a cultural “city within the city” that sponsors a vast range of public spaces and programs, from the visual and performing arts, to new technologies, to education, to markets and a hotel. Rather than adding new architectural statements, however, we have worked primarily through subtraction to carve from the historic warehouses their amazing potential for public and cultural activity, retaining as much public outdoor space as possible.

The firm’s winning proposal includes a hotel, education and exhibition centers, and plenty of outdoor space. The island’s old warehouses will be renovated and a few new spaces will be built, including a triangular tent to house exhibitions in the winter and a sculpture garden in the summer.

Abramovich has also brought in Zhukova’s Iris Foundation as a contractor for the project, according to the MT. A branch of the foundation established for the island, Iris New Holland, will be closely linked to Zhukova’s Moscow exhibition space, the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture.
