The Qatari royal family has paid £158million-$250million for Paul Cézanne’s The Card Players, the highest price ever paid for a work of art.
Qatar is the world’s largest buyer of high-value art, and Sheikha Al-Mayassa — the emir’s daughter and chair of the Qatar Museums Authority — holds the purse strings. The emirate is reportedly behind purchases of big-ticket Rothkos and Warhols as well as tens of millions of dollars’ worth of art and antiques to stock three national museums in Doha.
The sale beats the previous record of £88.7 million paid for Jackson Pollock’s No 5, 1948, in 2006.
The other four pieces in Cézanne’s post-impressionist series, painted in the early-to-mid 1890s, are held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Courtauld Institute in London and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

“The Greatest Ferraris Of All Time - The GTO — one of 36 produced by the Italian company in 1962 to 1963 — was sold privately in the U.K early Jan. 2012 to unidentified buyer,who is likely to be a billionaire Ferrari collector.
Investors are looking to rare autos as an alternative to volatile financial markets.
The Ferrari racer was an early example, had a competition history and was in well-preserved condition with original paint, Cars often fetch higher prices through discreet transactions than they do at auction.
Above is not likely to be the actual car sold.
The 250 GTO was designed to compete in GT racing.

A new privately funded royal yacht to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee won the backing of David Cameron yesterday the 16th of Jan. 2012.
The plan is also being privately ‘supported’ by Prince Charles and Princess Anne.
Mr Cameron and senior Conservatives have swung behind the idea of a replacement for Britannia – scrapped as Labour came to power in 1997 – as a ‘fitting way’ to mark the Queen’s six decades of service to her country. The Prime Minister has pledged his ‘full support’ for the ‘truly inspiring’ and ‘splendid’ initiative.
The ship has been designed by the internationally renowned British naval architect Colin Mudie, whose designs have included sail-training ships for several navies. It has been codenamed FSP21 (Future Ship Project for the 21st Century) or ‘University of the Oceans’, underlining its educational role.
The Project
A maritime education and adventure training combination has proved to be outstandingly successful overseas, but has not been pursued to this major extent in the UK.
In the year 2000 the Government appealed for projects that would provide “structured and challenging activity within an educational experience”. It responded with enthusiasm to the FSP21 proposals.
Broad and flexible educational and professional programmes for a wide range of young people, combined with the acknowledged benefits of adventure training under sail, will ensure year-round appeal and commercial viability. School leavers will be positively linked to the worlds of work, university, research and vocational training.
The £80m procurement will be raised from a combination of sources. An Operating Agency, set up as a Charitable Company limited by guarantee, will oversee the design and build of FSP21 through an operating subsidiary, which will also manage the ship in service.
